ABOUT THE WORKSHOP

Workshop Details: Headliner

Workshops at Fieldwork Japan are a unique and intimate experience. Participants can expect to step away from their day-to-day life and be fully immersed in the world of the Fieldwork Studio, where they will live and work with our visiting artists, 24/7.

Bruce Dehnert, Ashwini Bhat & John Dix are each remarkable artists in their own right;

together they will be a force to be reckoned with.

We will begin with four days in the studio where Bruce, Ashwini and John will demonstrate their diverse methods of working with clay and share their comprehensive knowledge of ceramics. Participants will spend time working independently to create work for the anagama using Shigaraki clay - famous for it's rich & rugged qualities. Expect to have your eyes opened to new and exciting ways of working with materials and tools, and prepare for your work to be pushed in new directions.

We will allow the work to dry for a day and use the opportunity to tour the local pottery region. With over 800 years of history, Tanba-Sasayama is recognised as one of Japan's Six Ancient Kilns, with the oldest surviving noborigama in the country. With over 60 potteries to visit it will be a busy and inspiring day.

The next two days will be spent loading the kiln, with Bruce, Ashwini and John discussing the various possibilities and choices. Once the door is bricked we’ll be ready to kick off our 6-days of around-the-clock firing! The cooling period will give participants the chance to travel further afield for a few days before coming back together for the unload and a farewell lunch.

At Fieldwork Japan you will make the most of every minute - whether that's in the studio, by the kiln, wandering through the local villages and rice fields, or exploring the region. Join us for this rare opportunity to work in Japan alongside three international leaders in woodfired ceramics.
